The onset of side effects depends on the patient's tolerance threshold, which is higher in drug addicts than in the general population.
The symptoms most frequently observed with buprenorphine administration are: Constipation, headaches, insomnia, asthenia, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, fainting and dizziness, orthostatic hypotension and sweating.
Other side effects that been reported are: Respiratory depression, hepatic necrosis and hepatitis, hallucinations.
In patients presenting with marked drug dependence, initial administration of buprenorphine can produce a withdrawal effect similar to that associated with naloxone.
